Assessing wild genetic background and parental effects on size of growth hormone transgenic coho salmon

چکیده
Experiments examining potential impacts of growth hormone (GH) transgenesis in fish typically use a single source strain and do not address differential strains different genetic backgrounds. Here, we examine the effects differing backgrounds when reared culture on transgenic nontransgenic coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) produced by mating sires from rivers with dams origin. We found significant difference size between offspring originating various river systems British Columbia. This was independent differences transgenotypes (i.e., vs. offspring). However, or sire were relatively small compared to transgene, which consistent regardless Thus, results derived studies GH population can provide useful information for assessments other systems. has important implications risks introgression transgene into populations.

Endocrine effects of growth hormone overexpression in transgenic coho salmon.
Non-transgenic (wild-type) coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), growth hormone (GH) transgenic salmon (with highly elevated growth rates), and GH transgenic salmon pair fed a non-transgenic ration level (and thus growing at the non-transgenic rate) were examined for plasma hormone concentrations, and liver, muscle, hypothalamus, telencephalon, and pituitary mRNA levels. GH transgenic salmon exhi...
متن کاملGenotype-Temperature Interaction in the Regulation of Development, Growth, and Morphometrics in Wild-Type, and Growth-Hormone Transgenic Coho Salmon
BACKGROUND The neuroendocrine system is an important modulator of phenotype, directing cellular genetic responses to external cues such as temperature. Behavioural and physiological processes in poikilothermic organisms (e.g. most fishes), are particularly influenced by surrounding temperatures. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS By comparing the development and growth of two genotypes of coho sa...

Growth hormone (GH) transgenes can significantly accelerate growth rates in fish and cause associated alterations to their physiology and behaviour. Concern exists regarding potential environmental risks of GH transgenic fish, should they enter natural ecosystems. In particular, whether they can reproduce and generate viable offspring under natural conditions is poorly understood. In previous s...
متن کاملPopulation effects of growth hormone transgenic coho salmon depend on food availability and genotype by environment interactions.
Environmental risk assessment of genetically modified organisms requires determination of their fitness and invasiveness relative to conspecifics and other ecosystem members. Cultured growth hormone transgenic coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) have enhanced feeding capacity and growth, which can result in large enhancements in body size (>7-fold) relative to nontransgenic salmon, but in nature...
متن کاملMuscle fibre size optimisation provides flexibility for energy budgeting in calorie-restricted coho salmon transgenic for growth hormone
Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) transgenic for growth hormone (GH) show substantially faster growth than wild-type (WT) fish. We fed GH-transgenic salmon either to satiation (1 year; TF) or the same smaller ration of wild-type fish (2 years; TR), resulting in groups matched for body size to WT salmon. The myotomes of TF and WT fish had the same number and size distribution of muscle fibres, ...
